Top Ten Tuesday (TTT, #22)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week's post is:

Top 10 Bookish Resolutions/Goals for 2015

In no particular order...

 1. Read 50 Books
Despite what my Goodreads says..... I have yet to complete a reading challenge fully and honestly lol..... I tend to make some exceptions with my book challenge list that should...or should not be excepted. ;)

2. Read More Contemporary
This is something that I have been trying to get better at. I tend to automatically put contemporaries into a box and never attempt to try them out.... But here's the kicker.... when I actually read contemporaries, I almost always enjoy them and give 5 stars. So this is something doable that I could try to do in 2015.

3. Make More Time for Reading!
I would really like to get back to reading everyday if possible! Since I have recently started college, schoolwork has taken a VERY large part of my time but when I find time and could be reading a good book, Netflix never fails at distracting me for hours on end!

4. Post More to My Blog
I haven't posted as much as I would have liked to my blog this year. I really enjoy updating my blog and posting my reviews and participating in memes. I really have no excuse to be honest lol. I'll have a full week of drafts to post and then never get around to posting them on their days. So hopefully I can do more posting in 2015!

5. Be More Consistent
I've noticed that when I actually post, I'm not consistent at ALL! Story of my life!

6. Finish Some Series That I've Started
Sooooo...... Yeah this is a bit of a problem. I tend to start tons of series and never continue on with the series. :( It's crazy how many series I've started but have only read the first book and ALL the books in the series have been released for a LONG time lol. And I actually want to finish them, but I keep getting distracted by other books!

7. Review ALL the Books I Read
I started this blog to help document the books I've read and remember what I thought about them. I constantly get asked by friends for a good book, but sometimes I literally can't remember why I liked that certain book. Reviewing all my books I read as soon as I finish them would obviously help with this tremendously.

8. Finish Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Vampire Academy
This is self explanatory. I feel that these need to be completed, and 2015 will be that year!

9. Attempt to Actually Complete Challenges This Year!
The fact is all the challenges I make for myself are actually doable..... I just don't complete them. I'm afraid laziness is the culprit. :)

10. Don't Stress About Reading or Blog!
In 2015, I need to not stress about not meeting my reading goal or reading challenges. I want to get back to reading more for fun than to meet a certain goal. If I meet a goal or complete a challenge that's great!.... But also if I don't that definitely okay too!

If you want more, you have to give less.

That’s the secret to dating in high school. By giving as little as they expect to get in return, seventeen-year-old Aubrey Housing and her three best friends have made it to the second semester of their senior year heartbreak-free. And it’s all thanks to a few simple rules: don’t commit, don’t be needy, and don’t give away your heart.

So when smoking-hot Nathan Diggs transfers to Lincoln High, it shouldn’t be a big deal. At least that’s what Aubrey tells herself. But Nathan’s new-boy charm, his kindness, and his disarming honesty throw Aubrey off her game and put her in danger of breaking the most important rule of all: Don’t fall in love.

Amber Vaughn is a good girl. She sings solos at church, babysits her nephew after school, and spends every Friday night hanging out at her best friend Devon’s house. It’s only when Amber goes exploring in the woods near her home, singing camp songs with the hikers she meets on the Appalachian Trail, that she feels free—and when the bigger world feels just a little bit more in reach.

When Amber learns about an audition at the North Carolina School of the Arts, she decides that her dream—to sing on bigger stages—could also be her ticket to a new life. Devon’s older (and unavailable) brother, Will, helps Amber prepare for her one chance to try out for the hypercompetitive arts school. But the more time Will and Amber spend together, the more complicated their relationship becomes . . . and Amber starts to wonder if she’s such a good girl, after all.

Then, in an afternoon, the bottom drops out of her family’s world—and Amber is faced with an impossible choice between her promise as an artist and the people she loves. Amber always thought she knew what a good girl would do. But between “right” and “wrong,” there’s a whole world of possibilities.

This week's post is:

Top 10 New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2014

In no particular order...

 1. Tammara Webber (Easy)
This author was one of those authors whose book I wanted to read for a very long time. The hype for this book when it came out was enormous and rightfully so, I really enjoyed this book as well as Tammara's writing style!

2. Rae Carson (The Girl of Fire and Thorns)
This was definitely a book and author I was not sure that I would like. With me being a cover whore, I based my liking on what I saw from the front cover.... lesson learned don't ever do that.... I was surprised by this book and its plot! I will definitely read more from this author in the future.

3. Charlaine Harris (Dead Until Dawn)
I would really like to get the next book in the Sookie Stackhouse series! I am a fan of this author now, I flew through this book and cannot wait to read more from her soon.

4. Jennifer L. Armentrout (Obsidian)
I have only read Obsidian so far and I LOVED it! I just found out recently that this first book was on Amazon for free so I figured what the hell let's try it out. I need to buy the rest of her books ASAP, I now see why people will read anything she puts out.

5. Abbi Glines (The Vincent Boys)
As I ventured into reading New Adult, I started with this book and author. I can say that I really like her writing style and really enjoyed this book. On to the next book now!

6. Tahereh Mafi (Shatter Me)
Ummm.... Tahereh Mafi..... You are now in my Top 5 Favorite Author, I loved her books! I have never read a book as fast as this one. My attention was hooked immediately and I loved every second of reading her books!

7. Jessica Shirvington (Embrace)
I read this author early on in the year and can remember that I liked her a lot. I have not continued with this trilogy yet but I am looking forward to it.

8. Kerstin Gier (Ruby Red)
So this is the most recent author that I have read this year. I had her books sitting on my shelves for some years now and finally got around to reading her first book last month. I am very much interested in her writing and storyline and hope to get to her others soon.

9. Susan Ee (Angelfall)
Since I read this book, I have been wanting to read more of Susan Ee. I really like the plot and how the story ended, it left me wanting more of her writing. I look forward to reading more from her next year.

10. Sophie Jordan (Uninvited)
This author surprised me, I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did. I really liked the concept of having a killing gene and like where she took the story. I have yet to read more from her, but next year will definitely have to be the year of sequels!

Top Ten Tuesday (TTT, #19)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish.

This week's post is:

Ten Characters You Wish Would Get Their Own Book
Now my choices are very scattered because these are some of the first people to pop into my head. ALSO.... I have not finished a lot... mostly any.... of these series so some things I say may not be relevant considering that I haven't yet finished the series yet to know if these characters situations are better explained in future, further books. Just a heads up!

In no particular order...
And DISCLAIMER:: spoiler in the comments below (Divergent) as a warning!

 1. Lucas (Easy)
With more questions and concerns about Lucas's past and his parents, I would really like to know more about the event that happened and hear it from his POV. I think it would be interesting to have his character tell us what exactly went down and how life was before and after the incident.

2. Reyn (Immortal Beloved)
This was the most recent book that I finished reading so I naturally have questions about the characters with me having read just the first book so far. Reyn's character in particular has an interesting past that I would like to see from his point of view.

3. Dante (Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe)
I would really like to see this story either told from Dante's POV or have him get his own book about his life. I really liked the characters in this book and wouldn't mind learning more about Dante's character!

4. Dawson (Obsidian)
I have only read Obsidian so far and I LOVED it! I just found out recently that Dawson actually has his own novella of sorts (Shadows, (#0.5 Lux)) so I'll have to read more about his story soon since there is more to find out about his mysterious story.

5. Caleb (Divergent Trilogy)
Now although while reading the trilogy I really didn't like Caleb.... But.... I would also like to know all that happened after he chose Erudite in the first book. I think a more in depth look into all that the events he experienced on his own as well as with the characters we know in the books would be interesting.

6. Kanin (Immortal Rules)
This pick literally popped into my head as I brainstormed characters to pick... but nonetheless, although I haven't read the Immortal Rules in almost 2 years I can remember his character being really mysterious and secretive.

7. Wolf (Scarlet)
I really think it would be interesting to know how Wolf grew up and more about his past.

8. Gale (Hunger Games Trilogy)
So this one also randomly popped into my head, I guess I would like to know how he dealt with life in District 12 after Katniss left for the games as well as more on how he was involved with the events that happened at the end of the Quarter Quell.

9. Raffe (Angelfall)
Since I read this book, I have always wondered what went through this character's mind. I think I could be cool to see him with his own book. I have yet to read Worldafter so I could get more insight there but until then... he gets his own book for now!

With this one I obviously cheated, I couldn't think of any more book characters so I'm stopping there! What were your pics?

The Girl of Fire and Thorns (Fire and Thorns, #1)

The Girl of Fire and Thorns (Fire and Thorns, #1)

 Author: Rae Carson
Series: Fire and Thorns, #1
Pages: 423
Challenge: Goodreads Challenge 2014, 2014 Book Bingo Challenge
Genre: Fantasy
Acquired: Library
Rating: ★★

*****

Goodreads Summary:

Once a century, one person is chosen for greatness.
Elisa is the chosen one.

But she is also the younger of two princesses, the one who has never done anything remarkable. She can't see how she ever will.

Now, on her sixteenth birthday, she has become the secret wife of a handsome and worldly king—a king whose country is in turmoil. A king who needs the chosen one, not a failure of a princess.

And he's not the only one who seeks her. Savage enemies seething with dark magic are hunting her. A daring, determined revolutionary thinks she could be his people's savior. And he looks at her in a way that no man has ever looked at her before. Soon it is not just her life, but her very heart that is at stake.

Elisa could be everything to those who need her most. If the prophecy is fulfilled. If she finds the power deep within herself. If she doesn’t die young.

Most of the chosen do.

  *****

 My Thoughts:

Elisa's fate was chosen the moment they found out she was the chosen one. She is soon secretly wed to a king, whose country is heading towards great destruction. With Elisa being the chosen one, she is the only one who can save the people.

At first I found Elisa INCREDIBLY annoying! She constantly put herself down and thought less of herself and wished that she wasn't the chosen one. It was like a never ending whining party!.... I just wanted to forcefully shake her and tell her to have some self-respect and accept her situation. She fortunately gets off of her rain cloud...hallelujah!... and actually realizes her worth and impotance during the remainder of the book.

I absolutely loved the plot, for me it was new and different and I really needed that from the YA that I was reading. This novel explored so many elements and topics like deceit, relationships, self-worth and self-esteem, loyalty, suspense and more. I also found the supporting characters intriguing and necessary to the plot's twists and its progression.

My favorite scene was the ending fight scene and its intensity. I loved just about any scene with Humberto in it, he was such an sweet character to read about. So as far as what I liked and disliked.... I liked Humberto as well as Elisa and her captors' journeys. Throughout the story their journeys made the plot that much more interesting and worth the read. It was definitely a major part of the story as well as the effect of Elisa being the chosen one.

Now as I have already mentioned... Elisa's problems with accepting herself ruffled me as well as the actual descriptions of Elisa's character in the novel. She was described as being overweight and loving to eat, and she didn't feel that she was as pretty as her older sister who was thinner. I didn't like that she seemed to dwell on the fact that she wasn't like her sister, who seemed to be their family's golden child. I feel that the author may have tried to incorporate real life issues into this fantasy plot to better connect with the readers, but honesty I felt that it was unnecessary within this plot. I felt Elisa used it as more of a handicap and excuse to some of the things that she did or went through. Maybe in a different novel or plot, this concept could have had a real meaningful impact but within this story I felt that it was just too much.

Okay lol.... done with my mini rant....

Now as far as other problems with the story I found the pacing to be a bit off. So hopefully this makes sense and you see what I mean....For some events that happened, they were brushed off and briefly mentioned or explained when at some times they could have been developed and further elaborated on to avoid ambiguity within the storyline. Vice versa, some events were explained to thoroughly and dragged out, when I felt that they could have been explained concisely and briefly since their relevance wasn't as significant as say some of the other plot events.

The ending was very interesting, it ended in a way that made me want to know what happened afterwards. I do really want to know how the story will progress in the other novels in the trilogy. Although there could have been better character development, I did really enjoy this book. It took me a minute to read this... like a week... but that could be in part due to the pacing issues I mentioned, if I got bored with an event or the chapter I was reading I would often put it down and come back about a day or so later. Overall I gave it 4/5 stars and I would recommend to those who like to read fantasy or those who are looking for a new and interesting plot.

If you have read this book, let me know your thoughts below!!
